Mentorship has always been very important to me. I cherish the moments that I get to encourage others. Without Sisterly Love, an organization exemplifying mentorship, sisterhood, and love, I would not have those moments.
Sisterly Love is an organization of female UVA students that mentor female Charlottesville High School students. We talk about beauty standards, college prep, societal issues, academics – the list goes on and on.
My favorite memory while being in this organization would be attending a basketball game that two of my mentees invited me to. They were both seniors and that night was their last home game. I played basketball in high school, so I understood how big of a deal it was for them. When I walked into the gym, the smiles on their faces filled my heart with warmth. I was so content – just seeing them happy. They both played amazingly, and were individually recognized for reaching 1,000 points! I don’t think I’ve ever been so proud before.
Now, my mentees are in college. Both of them. Living their dreams, playing basketball, and enjoying college. To hear them say I helped them to get this point in their lives is so motivational. This is the reason I mentor.
I am now the President of Sisterly Love. Throughout my experiences in this organization, I have realized how important is to help the youth in my community. I have taken pride in contributing to something bigger than me. I will always cherish the relationships I’ve made. Most importantly, I get to share my experience so others can have similar ones. Joining Sisterly Love was truly one of the best decisions I’ve made during my experience at UVA.
